The Kenya Women Judges Association hosted the 2nd African
Regional Conference for Women Judges between 6th and 8th August
2001 very successfully. The Theme of the Conference was Application
of International and Regional Instruments at National Level.
The conference brought together about 60 women Judicial Officers
from seven African Countries namely: Liberia, Uganda, Tanzania,
Zimbabwe, Cameroon, Nigeria, and Kenya as the host. It brought
together the main players concerned with the actual implementation
of human rights provisions as contained in International and
Regional Conventions/Treaties and domesticated by individual
countries.
The outgoing Regional Coordinator for Women Judges in the
Africa Region Hon. Mrs Laetitia Mukasa-Kikonyogo, Deputy Chief
Justice of Uganda handed-over the symbolic chair of Africa
Regional Coordinator to Hon. Lady Justice Joyce Aluoch of
Kenya at the Conference.
For the first time, the International Women Judges Association
will hold its biennial Conference in Africa, under the Chairmanship
of Hon. Mrs Laetitia Mukasa-Kikonyogo, Deputy Chief Justice
of Uganda. The Conference will be held in Kampala, Uganda
from 9th to 13th May, 2004.
The Kenya Women Judges Association has organized several
Workshops throughout the country for Judicial Officers
and Para - Legal Staff on the Law of Succession Act. Funded
by CIDA/GESP, UNDP and The Ford Foundation respectively.
Among the programmes that KWJA has implemented is the Jurisprudence
on Equality Programme (JEP) which is designed to train Judges
and Magistrates to apply International, Regional, and National
Human Rights norms to cases coming before them for hearing.
The Kenya Women Judges Association has already successfully
completed their first and second phases of the three phases
of the JEP Training Workshops.
As a member of the International Association of Women Judges
(IAWJ), three members of KWJA participated in a Conference
organized by IAWJ in Dublin, Ireland from 22nd - 26th May,
2002 sponsored by The Ford Foundation. The Conference Theme
was "JUDICAL CREATIVITY"
The Kenya Women Judges Association enjoys the support of
the Chief Justice of Kenya and the Attorney General of Kenya
in the running of its various programmes.
